GDR Border Strip by headstert GDR Border Strip by headstert
These are the last original 70m of the border strip, which parted Germany in East and West.

Just a few people know, that there were actually TWO walls, but only one (the big wall in the front) got "famous"

The border strip was built as following

From rear to front:

1st Wall ~ 2,5m high
Sensor wire (symbolized as the metal rods)
Spiked mats (in front of the Sensor wire; removed 1980)
Road for the border guards
Lighted area
2nd Wall ~ 3,8m high; Round tip -> grappling hooks weren't able to hook up the wall

The 2nd Wall was white so that you were easily seen by the border guardians.

Until the late 60s there were also contact mines and automatic shot systems installed. They were removed because of international problems.
